The team's objectives for the 2019 season also got a massive lift when World Rugby confirmed their decision to co-host six HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Men and Women's tournaments from this year, and added Cape Town to the list of selected double-header tournaments.

That means that the Springbok Women's Sevens, currently not playing in the HSBC World Rugby Women's Sevens Series, could be part of the global showpiece when it comes to Cape Town in December.

The South African leg of the tour could bring participation for the home union and for the Springbok Women's Sevens team, another opportunity to play against the best teams in the world.

The side played at both the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco in 2018, and found the gap between regular series contestants and themselves wider as expected.

Springbok Women' Sevens coach, Paul Delport, decided not to travel to Hong Kong next month for the World Series qualifiers, but they will instead focus on the African qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games, to be played in early September.

The team will travel to Spain in May to prepare for that and with World Rugby's announcement, they now have a massive opportunity to play in front of home crowds.

"We are delighted by this and we want to thank World Rugby and SA Rugby for this,” said Delport.

“We are looking to improve all the time and to become better, you need to have regular competitions and have quality opponents when doing so. As we are not playing on the circuit, it is tough to compete against the top sides, but this will lift our team no doubt.

"The HSBC Cape Town Sevens has been named best tournament for a reason and I am so happy for the team to potentially become part of this. They work very hard and playing at a tournament such as this one will be a good reward.”

Springbok Women's Sevens captain, Zintle Mpupha, said the news will lift the squad aspirations and effort.

"We always wanted to play in front of our home crowds and this dream will come true – we now need to make sure we are competitive now that the opportunity is coming around,” said Mpupha.

If the opportunity is grabbed, Mpupha said they hope to have good support come December: “We are all pretty excited to play in such a great stadium and responsive crowd, so thank you to World Rugby and SA Rugby for this.”
