FNB VARSITY CUP

The FNB Varsity Cup is the premier competition for university teams in South Africa and is contested on an annual basis between the nine foremost university rugby union teams in South Africa. The competition was first held in 2008 and it was won by Maties (Stellenbosch University) in the first three seasons. Between 2011 and 2014, Ikeys (University of Cape Town) and Tuks (University of Pretoria) both won the competition on two occasions, while the only other winners were Shimlas (University of the Free State), who won it in 2015, and Pukke (North West University, champions in 2016.

The history

Apart from the FNB Varsity Cup, a further seven universities play in the second tier FNB Varsity Shield, while there are also competitions for the best Under-20 teams (Young Guns) and the top residences from the various universities.
