ABOUT

More about the team

The Springbok Sevens team, nicknamed the Blitzboks, have been one of the South African rugby success stories in the last couple of decades, with their most recent success winning the HSBC SVNS league title for the 2026 season, a year after they took the World Championship title in 2025. They first played in World Rugby's Sevens Series in 1999 and were crowned overall champions in 2009, 2017, 2018 - the last two seasons marking a superb period for the team - as well as the COVID-impacted 2021 season. The Blitzboks draw massive crowds at the annual Cape Town event played in the Mother City in December. In 2022, they added a second Commonwealth Gold medal to their collection - which includes two Olympic Games bronze medals - after also winning the tournament in 2014.
