About

GUINNESS PRO14

South Africa joined the Guinness Pro14 tournament in August 2017 with two teams, the Toyota Cheetahs and Isuzu Southern Kings. The Guinness Pro14 is one of the three major professional leagues in Europe and is run by Celtic Rugby Limited, an Irish private company based in Dublin. Club sides from Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales also take part in this competition.

The history

Known as the Celtic League at its inception in 1999, the tournament has progressively grown to include more teams. In 2011 it was renamed as the Pro 12 to reflect the inclusion of teams outside the Celtic nations. The tournament was expanded from 12 to 14 teams in 2017, with two South African teams joining the league. A sponsorship deal with Guinness was signed at the beginning of the 2014/15 season, hence the name Guinness Pro 14.
