About

SUPERSPORT RUGBY CHALLENGE

In the 2019 edition of the SuperSport Rugby Challenge, a host of Rugby Festivals will again take place, at venues as far afield as Mossel Bay and Despatch, to Rustenburg and Ravensmead. In a change of competition format from previous years, the SuperSport Rugby Challenge will this year be split into two sections - North and South - with the top two teams from each section progressing to the semi-finals. The community-centred element of the tournament - which kicked off on Friday, 26 April and will concludeswith the final on Sunday, 30 June - will again feature a number of televised match-ups at these Sunday Rugby Festivals.

The history

The SuperSport Rugby Challenge replaced the Vodacom Cup on the South African rugby landscape in 2017, with one of the main aims of the competition taking provincial rugby to communities who would not normally have the privilege to see their rugby heroes in action. DHL Western Province were crowned champions in the inaugural season after they beat Tafel Lager Griquas in the final at Florida Park in Ravensmead, Cape Town, while the ISG Pumas won the tournament in 2018, clinching an epic final by 32-30 against Tafel Lager Griquas at the Bridgton Sports Grounds in Oudtshoorn.
